CHA-POW's Ultimate Sword-Fighting Tutorial: NEW trails

Postby Charlie » Fri Feb 01, 2008 7:36 pm

Image
im doing requests now, which is like anyone wants to know how to do a move, they tell me, and ill make a tut for it.

Also, most of these animations are made a long long long long time ago...

A NOTE BEFORE WE START!
this tutorial is rated HB+ for high begginers and over. do NOT attept the folowing if you are under the limit. this is to save your embarrasment. thankyou.

THERE ARE some stick you will need, these are.
1. swords http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/Clubsbsr6.zip
2. the best trails in the world
http://upd.animatorhost.com/CHA-POW/ADJ ... LSzos1.zip <---- new ones included
3.SHIELDS BISHZ! http://www.mediafire.com/?4ygxptlvwxw

Basic effects of Sword-Fighting.

Sparks: these are optional, and are made like this (by me).

1.start with a mix of small circle particles, and a few trails (about 5 segment ones.)
2. move them outwards from where they started, and making them smaller. with the trails, move the origin to where you want it, and then adjust the other segments so they become in line with the onionskin.
3. repeat this untill they all dissapear.
4. you can add effects like fading to make it dissapear more smoothly. yo can also add lighting like a gunshot.

tips: the small circle particles are supposed to be light, so dont add alot of gravity. the trails are heavy, and bounce.
Image
heres the pivot: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/sparkso8jp.piv <-- study it and maybe get the sticks.

Trails: these able you to use extra heavy spacing, but making your animation look less choppy. you should download a sword trail pack from the droidz stk dl page.

1. start with the sword, and ease it to where you want it a little bit.
2. ease it more, and add a small trail that runs smootly to where the sworn onionskin was.
3. you should be at about 40 pixels space by now. add another trail, but it has to run smoothly with the other one.
4. repeat this, adding or keeping the same trail.
5. now start to slow it down, and reversing the size and type of trails you used.
Image
TIPS! you can add the segmented trails to the end of the sword trails, to make it run more smoothly.
Image

heres the pivot: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/trailsdykt.piv

ABOUT TRAILS: i have seen many people animating swordfights, (newbs to swordfighting anims) using trails in a wrong way. this lil bit is to prevent that... and even if ur not a newb, and you suck at trails altogether, watch.

THIS is the right way to use.
Image
They start the the right times, and get bigger properly, and they flow very well.

WRONGS:

No Flow.
Image
look, the trails start nice and small, and get bigger, BUT: they dont flow, as in they dont stay in line with the onionskin.

Bad Timing.
Image
The trails dont get bigger as they go faster, but they start to fast and in this case go BEHIND the tip of the onionskin trail.

Hope that helped noobs.

BASIC ATTACKS easy for uncomplicated animations. also to fill in time in your animations.
its also a good idea if you are new to swordfighting, to begin with sticks, not swords, as they are a bit complicated to work with at times. the sticks are good because it dosnt matter what angle you look at them, they look pretty much the same.

BASIC BLOCKING: there are many ways to make a stick block, depending on how their opponent is attacking.
you will need: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/Clubsbsr6.zip

1.start with your stick, the club1, and maybe another club to attack him.
Image

2. make you stick start to move backwards, bending his back knee. also move his back arm backwards, and his front arm upwards.
Image

3.now move the body backwards, and keep the arms moving in the same direction as before. replace the "club1" with "club2". this gives the effect of turning it sideways. move the attcking club towards the stick at a faster pace. his legs also keep sliding back, his front foot in the same position, and his back foot sliding backwards.
Image

4.repeat number 3, so move the stick more, and replace "club2" with "club3"
Image

5. slow your stick down, and keep his arms going, along with his legs. the attacking club is nearly about to hit his. replace culb3 with club4.
Image

6. the attacking club hits your sticks, and creates sparks. your stick dosnt move alot, and the club4 sould stay there, so dont replace it with club5
Image

7. the stick hardly moves this time, because youre getting ready to move him forwards again. continue the sparks effect.
Image

8.move youre stick forwards, and replace club4 with club3 you can continue the spark effects, but its not that necicary. the attacking club moves backwards a bit. you are now ready to continue your animation.
Image
HERES THE FINISHED PRODUCT!
Image
PIVOT: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/b ... edna7h.piv
TIPS: always position the opposing stick close enough to hit the other one. if its too close, you may end up having a big mush and you cant understand whats going on. and also not too far away, as they wotn be able to hit each other.

OVERHEAD SWING:an extremely simple attack, and can be added after almost any move.

1. start with your stick, and club1, in a simple pose, with the back arm raised a bit.
Image

2.ease your stick forward, and make the sword point down slightly. also raise the bakc arm slightly and add a small trail to the sword. the stick is going to take a step forward, so of you cant walk them, get another tut.
Image

3. the front arm should be behind him now, and the back arm is still going up a tiny bit. the sword should point downwards more, and with a bigger trail. make him go further into the step.
Image

4. the torso moves back slightly and the 2 arms come together now. the sword moves up and has a larger trail. also this is about the time to add segmented trails, which should run smoothly with the rest of it. continue with the step.
Image

5.pretty much repeat step 4.
Image

6. repeat step 4, but move the torso forwards.
Image

7. the origin moves downwards slightly, the trail becomes smaller, and the stick slows down a bit.
Image

8. the trails are smaller, the stick moves slower, and slides a tiny bit. the segmented trail is dissapeardeded.
Image

9. ther stick hardly moves, the sword points downward more, and the trails dissapear completely.
YOURE DONE!
Image
PIVOT: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/o ... eduqxo.piv

STABBING

i wont go through too much with this, because its one of the easyest thing to do in pivot.

all it is is a punch with a sword, so heres a pic.
Image
PIVOT: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/s ... edpeyd.piv <definatly study this, if you dont get how to punch.

BACKWARDS STAB. (requested by: stickdude1001) FIRST REQUEST!
good to continue an animation, a pretty basic one, but it can look bad if you stuff it up.

1. start in a basic position, with your sticks sword facing upwards a bit.
Image

2. your stick is going to step backwards, so lift his front leg up and his arms a little, and move his origin backwards. also, the sword has to run smoothly, or it will look too light, to do this, keep the tip of it pointing at where the last onionskin tip was.
Image

3. move the swords position down, and continue the backwards step. also bring the arms inward to the body a bit.
Image

4. continue the backwards step, and lift the arms a bit higher. his front leg should be in the air by now.
Image

5. switch club1 with club2, this gives the effect of multi dimension. also i make it look less light, and more heaviy, as i said in step 2. continue with the backward step, and move his back back a lil.
Image

6. keep it up with the backwards step, change club2 to club3, and move his body forward a bit. bring the arms downward.
Image

7.continue, and change club3 with club4. basically like step 6... bend the arms more.
Image

8. bring the arms down to his body, and continue with the finishing of the step. keep club4, but make it not very visible. bend the back forward a bit.
Image

9. BANG! club4 is now club 1, to make the stab look more fasterer. ease to the finishing step, or go onto another step.
Image

10. keep club1, and keep easing how you think it should go, because its up to you what you might do next in the animation.
Image

11. ease more, and finish it off how you want it. easy enough? (sorry about the no detail at the end, but you dont know how hard it is to make a tutorial like this...)
Image

FINISHED!
Image

PIVOT: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/b ... almgdw.piv

SIDEWAYS SWING! (requested by martinimarts11)

easy looks. hard to do. thats why theres a tut!

1. start your stick in a simple pose, (sword over shoulder)
Image

2. start to take a step backwards, or for those who know how, start to turn around. also add a small trail.
Image

3. bigger trail. arm starts to come downwards. keep going with the turningering around.
Image

4. OMG NEW TRAILS! add one. they goodness. arms keep going down. keep going with step. make the good trail go smoothly with the other tip of the sword.
Image

5. ur stick should be realy thin now, as in all bodyparts near each other. arms go down more. trail runs smoothly. club1 = club2
Image

6.dont move his arms too much. or the trail. it gives the effect of turning somehow. the arms are going up now. continue with step. from now on its like a normal half step.
Image

7. the arms go up more. continue with step. its all basic really... club2 = club1 again.
Image

8. arms up more. cont. with step. easy enough. club1 = club2
Image

9. trail is smaller... arms up more. club2 = club3
Image

10. adj. trails gone. small trail there. ease to a stop. club3 = club4
Image

11. ease more to a stop. DONE!
Image

FINISHED! Image

PIVOT: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/s ... alv4gf.piv

UPPERCUT SWING!(Requested by Emmune)
also a good move, i like the way it turns out. can be used anytime really...

1. start in a pose similar to this.
Image

2. start to ease a step and raise the arm and sword a bit.
Image

3. tile the head forward a lil bit. asi arm again. keep it up with the step. raise the sword a bit.
Image

4. raise the sword more. repeat step 3.
Image

5. amr come down a bit. so does the sword.
Image

6.repeat step 5 and add a small trail.
Image

7. lift the arm up more, and also add a small adjustable trail. still going with the step...
Image

8. the sword kind of moves out sideways more, not up. repeat step 7 really... bigger adj. trail.
Image

9. Now bring the sword up. continue with the step. keep that trail FLOWING!
Image

10. repeat 9. foot slows down. trail gets smaller. sword moves up more.
Image

11. start to slow it all down. ease it. trail gets smaller.
Image

12. ease it more. no trails.
Image

13. YESH! FINISHED! AND FOR ME, I FINISHED THIS PART OF THE TUT!
Image

FINISHED:
Image

PIVOT: http://uploaded.pivothost.org/CHA-POW/u ... allauu.piv

lol, thanks. i might add more complicated things now. its not for begginers, because you have to know the basics of walking, running, punching, and jumping to do some.
