Kris's Coding Progress

Last Update: November 15, 2009 @ roughly 11:00P.M. (-5 GMT)

If you ever went there when this thread first started, you may have noticed that it's changed dramatically. That's because I'm finally starting to code it after this web design I made in Photoshop:

http://k--s.deviantart.com/art/My-Ninth ... -143575665

You may comment with help, or with CC, or both.
No comments are to be made about how WordPress sucks, lol.

Q's/P's:
Note: I always try Google, but sometimes the results confuse me, or I don't find what I'm looking for.

Image Right now, the design is set for resolutions 1024x768 and lower. But my resolution is 1280x1024, and because of this, the background image doesn't go all the way down the layout for me. All I see is this. Is there a simple way, either in the CSS, the HTML, or the PHP, to make it fit all resolutions? JS is not an option for me. I don't want to mess with it.

ImageI cannot seem to find a way to move the "Edit" link from the bottom of the posts, to to the right of the Title/Date. Of course, I haven't spent much time worrying about it, I might find a solution myself later.

It's called Lorem Ipsum. This isn't a thread about the blog posts, anyway.
It's about the design and my coding troubles.
In fact...perhaps your post is worthy of a warning.

It's called Lorem Ipsum? It's called Latin?

It's called Lorem Ipsum? It's called Latin?

Oh, I almost forgot. LOLWERDPRESS

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Rem's right.

Anyways, the site's too narrow. It's partially because I have a widescreen laptop, but having ~400px of blank space is a bit distracting.

edit: People usually call it Lorem Ipsum because most people don't know about the Latin origin thing, and it always starts with "Lorem Ipsum dolor sit amet blah blah blah" unless you instruct a generator otherwise.

For lulz, here's the english translation of the main part.
Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?

I know it's Latin, but you don't refer to it as Latin when you talk about it. You don't say "Oh yes, I just used some Latin to fill in the text areas." Unless I'm blind because I've only seen people refer to it as "Lorem Ipsum".

And thanks for contributing to the thread, Rem ¬_¬

Shyft, I will proably widen it out, tomorrow. Now that you've said it's too narrow, I can't help but agree with you.

I usually jam the lyrics to Lilium into text areas when coding. Makes me feel different. >:

Anyway, you should consider adding more depth, or even a third dimension when coding blog layouts. That little bit of 3D can really appeal to the eye. I mean, we've seen it all before. Blogs upon blogs of crap with no eye candy to stare at when reading boring entries about the blogger's life.

People like eye candy, web developers like eye candy that renders quick. I feel like I'm repeating myself.

P.S: Have you considered trying CSS 3 properties? They're a good laugh. Especially moz-border values. I'm still waiting for webkit-border values so I can actually use CSS 3 in a template.

That is different, Rem!

And I will hopefully be adding another dimension, as you said. But for now I just want to continue messing around and editing the coding so I can learn certain things.

Have you considered trying CSS 3 properties?

Hmm...interesting. I don't know how I'd really apply all of those into a theme. But I'm still very new to all of this.

http://kr1s.net/wp

I've made the layout wider, but it doesn't really look too good. I'm making another design in Photoshop that perhaps I'll be able to code. It would be really hard, but I think the design itself is looking promising. I think once I finish making this one, I'll just start editing the other code to look more like this one.

http://i33.tinypic.com/iwr9rt.png

Instead of having a sidebar, or a footbar (sidebar at the bottom) I'm just putting it as a dropdown menu underneath the navbar.

E: Okay, here's the final product:

'blog' and 'categories' are both the hover-view.

It's CSS, you put it into a stylesheet. ;)

It's not rocket science.

Well I know what CSS is, I've used it. But what I meant was that I don't quite know how I'd apply those into a design. lol

You don't see where a -KIT-border-radius property would come in handy?

Osnap, I didn't see that one. That would make life sooo much easier, and I could definitely try newer designs if I used CSS3.
